What we can do

ELF can offer a complete design service for Office, Industrial and Commercial installations as well as exterior floodlighting and sports floodlighting. With the introduction of CIBSE Lighting Guide LG7, the lighting of office spaces in particular has become more complex. The whole idea of the code s to produce a more visually acceptable balance between the amount of light on the working plane and the surrounding walls and ceiling. By using the old category 2 luminaires, the ceiling usually appears very dark in relation to the working plane and the walls have a scalloped effect. This gives rise to the ‘tunnel effect which can result in headaches and eyestrain.

For a room to comply with LG7 the designer must ensure that the ceiling illumination is 30% of the illumination falling on the working plane and the walls should be no less than 50% of the working plane. In addition, if a louvre type luminaire is used, either as a combination direct/indirect or direct only, LG7 lays out the specific brightness and cut-off requirements for use in a visual display environment. It should be noted however that even if the louvre complies, the room still may not comply if the other requirements are not met.

We are able to produce computer aided plots to reassure the client the specification is being met and provide detailed data sheets to illustrate the equipment being used. We can work with PDF and Autocad drawings via email as well as hard copy paper drawings. We aim to turn around within 3 working days depending on complexity and other commitments.

LED Lighting

LED lighting is extremely energy efficient. Most LED light bulbs use only a fraction of the power of a similar fluorescent or incandescent light bulb, making them far less of a drain on your building’s energy consumption.

On average, LED light bulbs are four to five times as efficient as incandescent lights and measurably more efficient than fluorescent lighting, based on their rating using the Lumen system.

LED lighting is also capable of producing a large amount of light at a lower wattage than conventional lighting. Widely available LED lights produce between 46 and 75 lumens per watt, versus 16.7 to 19.8 lumens per watt for incandescent lighting.

This energy efficiency has several benefits for your building. If you have a solar energy system, the reduced electrical consumption of LED lighting can make achieving electricity independence far easier.

If you depend on grid power, the reduced electrical consumption of LED lighting can lower your energy costs, resulting in a significant saving over the course of the year, particularly in homes and buildings that are lit throughout the evening and night.

Lighting Controls

Lighting controls offer further benefits than simply saving energy. Depending on the application they can improve comfort, reduce maintenance costs and impart greater flexibility to the use of a workspace. They need not be complicated or hard to understand; in fact, they should always be easy to use and manage the obvious payback involves the cost of the electricity being saved by the controls – either through turning lights off or dimming them. If a lighting control system is able to dim as well as switch then increased electricity savings can be realised.

Dimming gives occupants more choice over the levels of lighting they experience. It is also less intrusive to adjust lighting levels than to suddenly turn them off. If the lighting controls can be implemented alongside fully dimmable lighting then the staff will be happier, the savings will be greater and the lighting design will be maintained.
